Dear Durham Parents and Carers,
This term, our topic will explore exciting natural events and how our world works.
In Maths, we will be learning about length and height, measuring carefully in centimetres, comparing objects, and using standard units. We will also begin statistics by collecting data and presenting it in charts and tables
In English, we will read The Firework-Maker’s Daughter and focus on understanding the story, exploring characters, and writing creatively. We will also enjoy poetry, including acrostic, rhyming, repetition, and shape poems.
In Science, we will explore sand and its properties, as well as different materials and textures. We will also learn about Earth’s layers, including the crust, mantle, and tectonic plates.
In Geography, we will learn about volcanoes and tsunamis—how they form, where they happen, and their impact on the world
In Art, we will create volcano models, paint lava flows, and design artwork inspired by tsunamis, using a range of materials
In Music, children will create soundscapes to represent volcanoes and tsunamis, exploring rhythm and dynamics
In P.E., we will practise orienteering and map reading, building teamwork and navigation skills
In PSHE, we will focus on being positive learners and thinking about our future. We will also learn about growing up and changes in the body in a safe and supportive way
In R.E., we will explore what it means to belong to a faith community and learn about different beliefs and traditions
We will also have special “Growing Up Days” to support children as they develop, with age-appropriate activities and time to reflect
